Graduate Minors

Graduate minor in HDFS

HDFS offers a graduate minor for both the master’s (M.S.) and and doctoral (Ph.D.). Administrative requirements include:

  • The student must receive approval from and meet the minimum requirements established by the program offering the minor.
  • The student must have a minor representative on the Program of Study (POS) Committee.
  • Within the POS Committee, the major professor and the representative from the minor field may not be the same person.
  • For a minor to be eligible to appear on a transcript, it must be approved by the POS Committee, declared on the POS, and listed on all examination reports.

In addition, follow the specific requirements for the degree:

  • You must have 9 credits in HDFS graduate courses (500 and 600 level)
  • There is a limit of 3 credits in seminar or workshop credit: 590, 593, 616, 690. (Credits in 591 or 691 are not allowed.)
  • A graduate faculty member from the minor program must serve on the POS Committee.
  • The final oral examination must test for the minor.

  • You must have 12 credits in HDFS graduate courses (500, 600 level).
  • There is a limit of 3 credits in seminar or workshop credit: 590, 593, 616, 690. (Credits in 591 or 691 are not allowed.)
  • A graduate faculty member from the minor program must serve on the POS Committee
  • The preliminary oral and final oral examinations must test for the minor.
  • A minor cannot be added to a program of study after the preliminary oral examination has been taken, nor can a minor be placed on the transcript after graduation, unless it was approved on the POS, listed on all examination reports, and recorded on the Application for Graduation form.

Minors for HDFS graduate students

Graduate students may choose minors from many fields including:

  • Anthropology
  • Economics
  • Gerontology
  • Journalism
  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Statistics

The department also participates in several interdisciplinary programs including minors, specializations, and certificate programs.
