Couple and Family Therapy Graduate Program

Thank you for your interest in ISU's Couple and Family Therapy Program! The program intends to assist students in earning a Master's degree, and helps prepare students for licensure as Marital and Family Therapists.

Program Options within the Couple and Family Therapy Program

There are two options within the Program:

1) Thesis - This option involves a program of 64 credits, and students will write a thesis. Students who complete the requirements for this program will earn an MS (Master of Science) in Human Development and Family Studies.

2) Non-thesis - This option involves a program of 62 credits. Students will work on a project on a topic of interest to them. Students who complete the requirements for this program will earn an MFCS (Master of Family and Consumer Science).

Preparation for MFT Licensure

Both options (the MS and MFCS) help students prepare for licensure as a Marital and Family Therapist in the state of Iowa. More information about licensure in Iowa can be found at the Iowa Board of Behavioral Science's website: http://www.idph.state.ia.us/licensure/board_home.asp?board=be

Students who graduate from the CFT program will have met the coursework requirements for Licensure in the State of Iowa.

Graduates of the CFT program will still need to work for a minimum of 2 years after graduation and accumulate a total of 2000 client contact hours in order to be eligible for licensure. See the above link to the Iowa Board of Behavioral Science for more information.

Licensure requirements vary from state to state; every state has its own unique requirements for licensure, including educational (course) requirements, client contact hours requirements, and supervision requirements. Prospective students are strongly encouraged to investigate the licensing requirements for the state in which they intend to reside and practice.

Accreditation

As of October 2008, the CFT program is not accredited by COAMFTE (Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education). Our goal is to apply for Accreditation by submitting a self-study in the very near future. If Accreditation is granted after a site visit, then, under this timeline, students who were in the program after the self study is submitted will be considered graduates of a COAMFTE-Accredited Program.
