The Department of Human Development and Family Studies Learning Community is designed for all freshmen students in any HDFS curriculum:

The goal of the learning community is to facilitate an easy transition from high school to university life by helping you make important connections with peers and faculty during your first year at ISU.  All freshmen students in HDFS are included in the learning community.

Components of the HDFS Learning Community include:

  • A Learning Community Orientation Course (HDFS 110)

  • An HDFS Student Peer Mentor

  • Reserved space in common courses such as Individual & Family Life Development (HDFS 102), Introduction to Sociology (SOC 134), and Critical Thinking and Communication (ENGL 150)

  • Study Sessions

  • Social Activities
