Dear Human Development and Family Studies Major:

We are pleased to announce the availability of undergraduate scholarships for students who are obtaining a Bachelor's degree in a Human Development and Family Studies curriculum:

Marie Roberts Barnard Scholarships are for majors in Early Childhood  Education (ECE) who have a record of academic excellence and are in financial need.

Freda R. Riecken Award.  This award gives preference to adult students(25+ years of age) who are returning to school to study Child and Family Services (Ch/FS), Family Resource Management (FRM), or Housing and the Near Environment (HNE) and have demonstrated academic excellence in their work.  If there are no adult student candidates for the Riecken scholarship, the department may then give the award to any other undergraduate in the same curricula identified above and who has displayed outstanding ability in his or her studies. The amount of the awards are $500 per year.

Dr. Mary Ellen and Dr. Glenn A. Atwood Scholarship. This scholarship is available to students majoring in Child and Family Services or students working toward licensure in Early Childhood Education. This scholarship gives priority to married students who are in good academic standing and demonstrate financial need. Other considerations taken into account for this award include demonstrated participation in departmental, college and/or university activities, as well as community activities.

Louise J. Peet Memorial Award for Excellence.  This award shall be open to undergraduate students majoring in Child and Family Studies (Ch/FS), Family Resource Management (FRM) or Housing and the Near Environment (HNE) curriculum.

Naheel Jeries Scholarship.  This scholarship is open to all students classified as juniors  who are enrolled  in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies. Awards are prioritized based on academic achievement.

John R. and Eloise Mountain Wright Scholarship.  This award gives preference to a student majoring in Child Development area, i.e. Ch/FS or ECE.  This scholarship gives priority to single mothers, mothers exhibiting financial need, and to international students.  Additionally, special consideration given to applicants associated with Cedar or Muscatine Counties.

Recipients for the scholarships will be selected by the Department of Human Development and Family Studies based on the respective eligibility requirements stated above, and also listed on the attached scholarship application form.  This form must be completed by February 8, 2008.  We hope to announce the awards by April 21, 2008.

Several of the scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need.  If you are interested in applying for these scholarships, you must authorize as soon as possible a copy of your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be sent to HDFS (see last page of application form).
